The Lion King Movie Night

On March 31st, 2015, we had our movie “night” (it was sort of a movie morning, since we watched in the mid-morning/ afternoon around 10:30 am / 11:00 am) the movie we watched was a classic Disney film called, the Lion King. In the movie we looked for characters that would benefit from taking HCOM 214. We found four characters that would benefit from HCOM 214, Scar, Simba and Timon & Pumba. We took notes while watching the film and later put them up on our slideshow. We found that, The Lion King, is a classic Disney Film and is actually a very complex movie, in my opinion this is not a good movie for kids, since it begins with Scar killing his own brother, then making his nephew believe that he killed his own father. This led Scars nephew, Simba feeling guilty and depressed, Scar then had his hyenas chase Simba out of Pride Rock where Simba befriends a meerkat and warthog duo, Timon and Pumbaa. Timon and Pumbaa raise Simba from a cub, and when Nala comes into the picture, Timon and Pumbaa are not happy and experience jealousy and feel as though Simba has chosen Nala over them.

We all divided up characters then further researched the conflict within those characters. Although most conflict in the Lion King, were all closely connected, the characters, Scar, Simba, Timon and Pumbaa all handled the conflict differently and all experienced different internal conflict. Scar is a very evil and devious character, all her wants his to be king and be in power. Simba runs away from his problems and is very defensive about his father’s death. Timon and Pumbaa experience jealousy and handle things in a very child-like manner.

 Our Movie night was very productive and fun. We all watched the movie in Tortuga lobby. We ran into some problems with finding an HDMI cord, so we borrowed one from an RA in Tortuga. We all invited a few friends to come and watch Lion King with us, it was very fun and everyone had a good time. We were sure to tell everyone that walked by that they were welcome to join us so we ended up with more people. Immediately after watching the movie we had a little recap on everyone’s notes that we took and then we put together our slide show and effectively incorporates every group members’ thoughts and opinions on the movie into it. After completing all of our work we went to the Dining Commons. By being together after the movie project we further discussed the movie and shared al of our different perspectives. I am very glad we took this day to get together as a group and invite some friends and watch a movie. It was definitely a lot more fun than I thought it would be. We all really got to know each other and discussing the movie really showed everyone’s different perspectives. We all worked very well together and all cooperated very well on everything.
