Chandler and Joey, Who has more power?

Roxanne Guel

Friends has got to be the most iconic show on television, even if it went off air over ten years ago.  So many things can be related back to Friends.  Six friends live in the hustle and bustle of New York City, dealing with conflict between each other, and within themselves.

In the clip, Chandler and Joey are in a huge fight.  In a previous episode, Chandler kissed Joey's girlfriend, Kathy, and developed feelings for her, making Joey extremely angry.  Chandler ends up having a relationship with Kathy, making things extremely tense with Joey and Chandler.  Joey is giving Chandler the cold shoulder, and Chandler wants to make things right again.  He tries everything to get Joey to talk to him, giving Joey the most power in the argument.  Chandler is basically bending over backwards and doing everything he can to make Joey forgive him.  In doing this, Joey has the power to either continue or end the argument.

Having the most power in any argument is tough.  It is also given to whoever has been scorned the most.  In this particular case, Joey is given the most power because Chandler betrayed Joey by kissing Kathy.  However, Joey doesn't necessarily handle having all the power correctly.  Instead of talking through the argument and having an adult like conversation, Joey has Chandler sit in a box for six hours to think about what he has done to Joey.  However, Joey does come to his senses when Kathy comes to talk and break up with Chandler, while Chandler is still in the box.  Instead of making Chandler stay in the box once Kathy is finished and is leaving, Joey decides that the argument is over and that Chandler needs to go after Kathy because he really has feelings for her.

Overall, the argument is never really truly resolved, it is simply forgotten about when Joey lets Chandler out of the box.  However, Joey handled the argument the way he saw fit, and eventually gave up having the power.
