"Spanglish Experience"

This movie night assignment was a very helpful and fun assignment to be a part of. I have never had to complete a project or presentation about a movie regarding the material that we are learning in class before. By analyzing movies and actually breaking down parts of the movie that had conflicts made me realize that conflict does happen a lot between people. Most people just become accustomed to problems and conflicts and they don't actually think about what they can do to improve the conflict and the situation. Most people are selfish and want to do what's best for them and not actually caring nor thinking about the other person or the needs and concerns of the other person.
Watching a movie with friends and classmates makes the project a lot better and something fun to complete, that is educational. By watching Spanglish, I have learned more skills on how to solve interpersonal conflicts in real-life situations. I was forced to engage more in the movie and not just watch it, while not really paying much attention to the little things. I was forced to pay very close attention and to listen to every small detail during the movie. The movie Spanglish presented many conflicts throughout the whole movie, from the beginning to the end. They were between different characters and they were caused by people who had different perspectives on issues and also caused by their personality and who they were as a person. For example, John was a very avoidant type person who tried to avoid every conflict as much as he could. With the conflict between Flor and Deborah, Deborah showed a very collaborative and understanding tone, while Flor had a very aggressive tone by engaging herself in the conflict and yelling to try and put her point across. Many of the other conflicts throughout the movie, presented avoidant, argumentative, aggressive, and collaboration tactics for conflict. By watching the movie, we got a sense and clip of almost every conflict style and tactic, and by evaluating them and analyzing them, we have learned a lot more.
By completing the powerpoint for this project I once again have learned that even movies can teach you many things about conflict and teach you skills that you can use for the rest of your life. Almost everybody is faced with conflict sometime in their lives, whether it is with roommates, or family members, or even friends. I also believe that the presentation was the most stressful part of this assignment, but my group and I met and divided the work evenly and everyone did their part. Overall, it was a very good experience doing this project and I enjoyed it.
